About core aeration
Core aeration is the process
of removing plugs of soil ranging in size
from 2 - 3 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. They then will
break back down and provide somewhat of a top dressing for the turf.
The benefits are reduced soil compaction reducing the thatch layer, and
allowing the air ,water, and chemicals applied to be better absorbed by
the roots.Core aeration is a very important part of any lawn care
program and should be performed at least once per year for cool or warm
season grasses. Bermuda grasses any time during the growing season.
Fescue
between September and early Nov..
ABOUT
THATCH
Thatch is defined as an accumulation of dead and
living plant material
(stems, roots, and shoots) that develops between the soil surface and
the green leaves of a turf. Thatch development is a natural process
that occurs during normal growth. Ideally, under proper management, a
turf achieves a balance between rate of organic matter production and
rate of decomposition.
Some thatch is desirable because it forms a cushion that decreases turf
wear. Thatch also insulates the soil from high and low temperatures and
reduces evaporation losses of water from the soil surface. A thatch
layer becomes undesirable when it exceeds a depth of 1/2 inch.
Thatch Problems
Excessive thatch accumulations can cause the following problems:
Thatch restricts water and air movement into the soil which are both
needed for good root growth. This also leads to more frequent watering.
Thatch provides an ideal environment for some turf insects and disease
organisms, such as brown patch and dollar spot.
Thatch makes mowing difficult because the turf becomes spongy. This
lets the mower to sink into the turf and cause scalping. Scalping
causes brown turf areas because all leaves have been removed.
Thatch raises the growing points (crowns), runners (rhizomes and
stolons), and roots above the soil surface. These plant parts are then
exposed to greater extremes in temperature, which often cause winter
injury.
Thatch can restrict downward movement of pesticides and fertilizers in
the soil. This results in reduced effectiveness of these materials.
Top dressing
Top dressing is the act of
applying material to the top soil layer of
the lawn and serves several functions depending on the mix of material
used.
It provides nutrients and helps soften hard soil if you have tried
every thing to get your lawn green and nothing seems to work this might
do the trick.
It also helps to level out any dips and humps you might have in your
lawn. Our process for applying top dressing is as follows.
For warm season grasses ( Bermuda or Zoisa)
1. Scalp the lawn and bag clippings.
2. Thoroughly aerate the lawn.
3. Apply and smooth top dressing fertilizer mix.
4. Clean up.
For cool season grass ( tall fescue)
1. Scalp the lawn and bag clippings
2. Thoroughly aerate the lawn
3. Apply and smooth top dressing fertilizer mix.
4. Apply high quality seed.
5. Clean up.

Joe, I just
wanted to thank you and tell you how much I appreciate the great job
you have done servicing our yard maintenance requirements.
As you know, I
travel extensively and it is extremely difficult to keep up with the
maintenance that needs to be done.
For the first
time since living in Alpharetta we have found someone that is
trustworthy and that we can depend on to do a good job for us. I am
especially impressed with the flexibility in the services that you can
provide.
